Popular or Quiet Room?

When this survey was conducted - between approximately 4-6pm GMT, 7-8 Oct 2011 - there were 100s of trivia rooms with less than 20 players, and 9 rooms with over 100!

Actually, the term used by the directory (irc.netsplit.de) is 'users' and there is no way of telling if 'users' are players or lurkers or bots until you visit a channel.

PROS:

Most players enjoy competition and/or company, and if you have no other trivia needs besides 'popularity' and have no deep-seated animosity towards players whose nationality, sex, age or circumstances differs from yours, then in a popular room you're likely to find both competition and company.

CONS:

A trivia room with too many players is unlikely to provide anyone other than top-flight players the opportunity to score; and if nobody or very few people are playing in a highly popular room then it is likely to be a front for private chatters.

Don't be fooled by rooms boasting to be 'popular' because of their many listed players. Most users listed would be 'lurkers' who never play or chat (and they become creepy after a while); or they are 'question-stealing' or 'personal information stealing' bots who are not real people at all!

Also, a room that is popular at, say, 4pm GMT may be deserted at 11pm GMT. If you're going to be playing regularly, and at various times of the day, then before choosing a room to hang out in you need to visit it over 24 hours to see whether it is as popular as you want it to be.

Another thing to remember is that 'popular'does not necessarily mean that you will be among like-minded people. You may be happier in a channel with a few players if you are very particular about the nationality, sex, age or circumstances of fellow players.
