Beginners and TrivGods

The mistake many beginners make is to go straight to a popular trivia channel where the TrivGods hang out and then complain bitterly that nobody gives them a chance.

An excellent place for beginners is #londontrivia @ undernet which physically prevents TrivGods from scoring after a 10 question streak. A message appears: “don't you ever get enough? Be a good Christian, let others play too!” Unfortunately, this channel is not listed in the IRC directories because for some reason is chooses not to have any welcome message or instructions.

The mere fact that there is a scarcity of Trivia rooms stipulating the level of play required shows that everyone prefers to be in one room with all levels playing. We found only two channels that clearly appear to exclude beginners:

#exp-triv ThunderCity
Expert-Trivia, over 150,000 questions, where the real pro's battle :)
category: Turkey Chat - network: ThunderCity - 3 users

#elite-trivia at abjects.net
Comment: The channel has cute commands – !Drinks !food !8ball !beer !rules – but unfortunately nobody was playing during the survey, and the top10 for the week was empty, indicating the channel may be deserted.

If a beginner goes to a channel like #exp-triv, or even one of the more popular trivia channels, then why should he/she be given a chance? This is a competitive game, guys, not a kumbaya meeting! There are hundreds of small trivia channels out there where beginners can hone their skills and enjoy a welcome they will not get in a channel dominated by TrivGods, so stop complaining!

So, is it better to have TrivGods and beginners - and everyone in between - playing in the same channel, or should more trivia rooms stipulate the level of playing required?

PRO:

It is definitely better to have all levels in one room because a canny beginner will learn much by watching the TrivGods play – and nothing is more satisfying than scoring on a question that only he/she knows in a roomful of TrivGods.

It is true that some TrivGods have a phenomenal memory and a quick brain, but most TrivGods gain that distinction after years of playing in one or more channel, learning the question-files backwards – and some merely become a TrivGod by playing 24/7.

Speed of connection and typing skill play as much a vital part in IRC trivia as brains, even more so perhaps, so new players who invest in a top level connection and a speed typing course could even-up the playing-field very quickly once they have familiarized themselves with the questions (most of which repeat over time).

CON:

A game dominated by TrivGods does tend to scare off new players and the channel risks ending up stale or even dead. Even the TrivGods tire of playing with the same old question-file and the same old people.

Starting off in a beginner’s level room sounds like a good idea but it may not give players the competition they need and the incentive to try harder.

A game dominated by TrivGods may encourage new players to cheat by using scripting.

The scores end up totally skewed at the top end, indicating that a TrivGod may be playing alone without any competition at all, or playing 24/7 denying new players a real chance to play the game. If someone is definitely hogging a channel, then a score limit could be set for each day and once reached a player is prevented from gaining more points.

To test that theory, see :

  • TrivGod Monopoly: comparing 1st and 10th scores

    Auto Fill-in Hints?

To date, only three trivia rooms appear to have 'Auto Fill-in Hints' - a format where hints are generated by players :

    • #trivia at EFnet
    • #TeamTrivia at DALnet
    • #londontrivia at DALnet

    PROS:

    It speeds up the game!

If you don't like waiting an eternity for the Bot to spit out its standardized hints - which is especially annoying if you know, say, the last name of a person but not the first - then you will enjoy being able to guess to your heart's content!

    CONS:

Once you have played a trivia game with auto-fill-in hints you will not want to play trivia in any other format. As there are only three trivia rooms to date with this particular format, you do not have much of a choice to go elsewhere to play if you need to.

Scripters can spoil your trivia experience by generating too many hints.

Stealing is made easier. If you know one part of the answer, but not the next, a trick is to work on the part you don't know first (and hope that nobody else knows the part of the question you know).

    No weird features?

It's only after you visit a number of trivia rooms that you realize that some of them have some really weird features. No doubt whoever coded these features did so for a very good reason, but for the average triv player who just wants to play a game with the least amount of hassle it can be annoying to discover :-

    1. questions are presented in 'rounds' with a lengthy break in between - e.g. #trivia at OperaNet. We all know that trivia can be addictive and a built-in break is a health and safety measure, but most of us prefer to take our breaks when we need them, not when we are ordered to!

    2. double questions! This is a brilliant innovation for players who prefer to play alone and dislike waiting for a question they can't answer to resolve before another question appears, but when you are playing in a group setting like most of us prefer to do then the double question feature just becomes horribly confusing - e.g. #triviaclub at IrCQ-Net and #triviacity at Undernet.

    3. the correct answer is not given if you get it wrong or don't know it - e.g. #gabriel at FDFnet.net and #knowitall at Europ.net. Maybe the reason was to get you curious enough to go find out on your own, but more likely it was to make it difficult for question-stealers to operate.

    4. the player ahead of you is NOT mentioned when you score - e.g. #trivia at Efnet. The TrivBot obviously knows who is ahead of you when it says you need "9,344 points to get to the next rank" so why not put us out of our misery and tell us who it is?

    5. the Bot is not coded to STOP spewing out hints when a correct answer is given - e.g. #trivia at OperaNet. This dreadful feature makes the game exceedingly slow and, for new players, it leads you to believe your first answer was wrong, so you try again and then you discover that ....

    6. only one answer is allowed per player - e.g. #trivia at OperaNet! This feature is obviously to discourage spammers, but it gives genuine players NO opportunity to correct a typo or have a better guess at the right answer. Your first answer is the only answer the Bot will accept.

    7. you need to perform a prompt for hints (and there's no instruction in the welcome message) - e.g. #gabriel at FDFnet. This is a brilliant feature for regular players who probably know the answer-file backwards and don't need hints, but it is not conducive to encouraging new players to stick around. Sure, the welcome message points newbies to a website where, presumably, there are instructions, but is it so hard to include the basic "type !hint" stuff in the blurb?

    8. points are expressed as "hugs" or "smiles" - e.g. #triviacity at Undernet. Okay, it is cute and was probably initiated to make everyone feel welcome, but c'mon guys!

    9. variable score questions that do not reflect the difficulty of the question - e.g. #trivia at Efnet has some really simple questions assigned massive points up to 500, while something really difficult is assigned a miserable 10 points! But wait, there's something worse than this ....

    10. excessive points - e.g. #triviacity at Undernet. No question is worth 41097 points plus a bonus of 40000 for getting 6 correct answers in a row! This feature was probably introduced to make the channel look busy - and players to feel important - but no new player expects to receive a year's worth of points in one easy session and it cheapens your effort when this happens.

    11. repeating the question with every hint - e.g. #chat-trivia at dalnet. The less "Bot noise" there is in channel the less cluttered the interface is. A !repeat command is all that is really necessary on the rare occasions when so may people are playing that someone may forget what the question was.

    12. #londontrivia @ undernet physically prevents players from scoring after a 10 question streak. A message appears: “don't you ever get enough? Be a good Christian, let others play too!” It’s a good place for beginners – and a warning is fair enough, in fact it’s a good idea – but stopping players from scoring any more is a bit heavy handed.

    Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

    Rules and regulations?

A quality trivia game cannot exist without basic rules and regulations, and new players can either be referred to a website for this information, or requested to type !rules before playing. Some trivia rooms, however, operate without any rules whatsoever - e.g. #trivia at Efnet.

    PRO:

With rules, you know where you stand in relation to what is and is not allowed in playing the trivia game. Some rooms allow googling for difficult questions, others don't allow googling full stop. Same thing for scripting - some rooms allow it, others don't.

With rules, the likelihood of being subjected to abuse or annoying behavior like 'stealing' is miminized (but not altogether ruled out, especially if no Op is in channel to witness the 'crime' and adjudicate on it).

With rules, you don't make a bad first impression by doing something that the regular players have decided is verboten!

If it ain't in the rules, then nobody has a right to crack down on you; and you have no right to crack down on them! Remember this when you are in a channel with no official rules.

We particularly want to commend #triviacity at UnderNet for its repeated in-channel message: "Please be respectful of 'slower' players, give them a chance, remember you were once a beginner yourself :))) Thanks * Eilidh"

    CON:

Too many rules can spoil the game and the fun, and channels with no rules rely entirely on the good nature of regular players to get along - and amazingly they mostly do!

Trivia rooms with strict rules encourage unfair accusals of cheating or stealing when a player is too fast (he must be scripting) or too slow (he must be googling). Everyone's connection speed varies, and everyone's recall memory works at different speeds, and what is foms (first on my screen) may not be first on yours.

Many players have 'cheat sheets' that they have compiled from previous answers and questions and can righteously claim that they are not 'googling' when they come up with an amazing answer. They are, in fact, worse cheaters than a 'googler' because they come to the game already armed with their cheat-sheets whereas a 'googler' generally only googles when nobody knows the answer.

Scripters who force hints are helping everyone get the answer faster, but scripters who hot-key difficult answers do gain a really unfair advantage.

Also, if a channel has no OP present then it is pointless having any rules regarding abusive or annoying behavior. Fellow players cannot kick or ban the abuser and must either use /ignore or leave the channel to find a room that is better patrolled.

    Bonuses, Jackpots?

More trivia channels are enhancing their games with various bonus features for streaking and speed, and some have added jackpot bonuses for no reason whatsoever other than to increase scores and it is a matter of personal choice, really, whether you think these enhancements add value to the game or detract from it.

    PRO:

You are likely to meet the world's best players in these rooms (a good 'pro' if you enjoy stiff competition).

If you're an expert triv player then bonuses and jackpots make it worth your while to keep on playing.

If you're trying to improve your game then a speed bonus makes it worth while to learn how to type properly; but you may have to pay bigger bucks for a faster connection.

If you choose a quite time of the day to play - not easy, because these rooms are truly global - you can enjoy incredible rewards for your efforts. A streak bonus is a lovely reward for hard work.

    CON:

Beginners and slow to average players don't stand a chance in these rooms because the world's best players achieve that distinction by being totally focused on their game, nobody else's, and will plug away for hours achieving astronomical scores without caring that they are preventing others less savvy from playing.

These rooms are not designed for community spirit - none of them have websites - so if you expect pleasant chat between questions you may be disappointed. The guys here are into scoring, not chatting and if they don't answer a question it is because they probably have you on /ignore.

When scoring takes precedence over the joy of learning and testing your memory with the trivia game - as well as getting to know other players - expect bad behavior. Bullying, cheating and stealing tend to be more prevalent in these rooms than elsewhere;and with these evils come flared tempers and a lot of hurt feelings. Enter at your risk!
