Masking vs showing IP address

Most of the following information was elicited from a world famous IT specialist and trivia player. (:

IRC is full of wannabe internet rulers, generally kids, who utilize readily available scripts and cracking programs to attack just about any random IP.

Some IRC networks help you avoid these attacks by masking your IP address if you register your nickname and set a certain option or mode. It varies from network to network.

In the irc.netsplit.de directory, #trivia at IRCstorm is the ONLY trivia channel that states upfront that you need to register for the best experience. Not understanding the risks they take playing without protection, new IRC players may consider registration to be a nuisance - or an invasion of privacy, maybe being forced to divulge real life personal details - and will give the channel a miss.

Unfortunately, the networks with the most active trivia channels - EFnet, DALnet and IRCnet - do NOT support masking, and EFnet is totally "old school" in that it has no channel or nickname registering services either (which means anybody can steal your nick and even the trivia channel itself if it is not protected from take-over attacks by having a network of TrivMON bots).

Also, although some web-based IRC gateways may mask your IP address, be aware that Mibbit does not; and also take into account that these gateways slow down your speed considerably. Read the following for a full explanation of web access: Web access or IRC client?

PRO:

If you've joined IRC to enjoy real-time competitive trivia, especially if you rely on one nickname for your game, then it is only a matter of time before your gaming is going to be severely disrupted by attack – and not necessarily from a fellow player who wants to get rid of you. It's a no-brainer to ensure a fun and safe IRC trivia experience by joining a network that allows your IP address to be masked!

CON:

Once you've registered a nickname, it may be difficult to change it, so choose carefully! Also, by choosing a secure network you may have to settle for a less exciting trivia experience in terms of player numbers or innovations; and you will have to rely on the honesty of players to tell you exactly who they are and where they come from if their IP addresses are masked.

It goes without saying, too, that people who have a fetish for collecting IP addresses will hate networks that cloak them. (:

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Apparently, there is no published ‘list of networks that support masking’, so you can try googling terms like 'irc' and 'hostmask cloaking' and failing that you will have to trawl through each network.

DALnet and OperaNet support nickname registration only, to protect your nickname, but they do not support masking to protect your privacy and security.

What are TrivMONs?

The following information was elicited from a world famous IT specialist and trivia player. (:

On various networks you may come across TrivMONs - the name varies according to what the channel manager calls them - which look like they could be OPs but are purely a bot network.

They are hosted on different machines, locally or around the world, and their purpose is to make sure that the manager retains control of the channel.

These bots keep each other, plus the Triv Bot and the channel manager OP'd; and multiple bots on different machines are to cover redundancy (in case one or more bots get disconnected).

Traditionally, if no one on an IRC channel has OPs, there's no way to regain ops for anyone, save for everyone leaving the channel. The first one to join an empty channel gets OP'd.

Some IRC networks, if not most today, have ways around this, but "old school" networks like EFnet have no channel or nickname registering services and channel managers are often challenged by take-over attacks.

In addition to the above, the TrivMONs can be be set up to monitor the channel ban list. If somebody is banned from a channel, the ban never expires automatically or is removed by the server. But bots can be setup to remove bans after a certain time (say, 24 hours).

If a channel manager is not careful, TrivMONs set up to monitor the channel ban list can appear to go berserk, constantly parading in channel the removal and re-adding of the bans. This happens because the ban list can be set to permanent for some bots, but one of the other bots doesn't know it. So, when this ignorant bot sees that "hey, these bans were set yesterday, it's time to remove them" the other bots go "hey, these bans were supposed to be permanent, let's put them back".

Although not sentient beings, bot networks can be used by their host server staff for spying - more on this later - and bot commands can, of course, make them say stuff in the channel, but that is not generally the purpose for which TrivMONs are used.

TrivGod Monopoly: comparing 1st and 10th scores

A channel that is monopolized by one or more TrivGod will show a marked and unhealthy difference in scores between the 1st and 10th place.

Arranged according to highest percentage difference between the 1st and 10th scores - highest indicating less monopoly - the following list was collated from information gathered during the month of October 2011 from sites that interest us.

Before looking at the individual channels, here is the % AVERAGE of the 4 trivia channels that were compared:

the % average difference between 1st and 10th place for the year was 2.59%
the % average difference between 1st and 10th place for the month was 2.08%


1. #trivia at EFnet

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 5,774,708; the 10th was 556,564. This is 9.64% of No.1's score, and way higher than average, indicating NO monopoly!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 403,235; the 10th was 51,392. This is 12.74% of No.1's score, and way higher than average, indicating NO monopoly!

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 11.19% puts #trivia 1st).


2. #triviaspot at DALnet

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 197,479; the 10th was 9,818. This is 4.97% of No.1's score, and above average, indicating NO monopoly!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 15,105; the 10th was 342. This is 2.26% of No.1's score, and higher than above average, indicating NO monopoly!

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 3.62% puts #triviaspot 2nd).


3. #teamtrivia at DALnet

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 129,243; the 10th was 5,660. This is 4.38% of No.1's score, and WAY above average, indicating NO monopoly!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 18,280; the 10th was 80. This is 0.44% of No.1's score, and WAY below average, indicating MONOPOLY!

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 2.41% puts #teamtrivia 3rd).


4. #triviaholic / #londontrivia at DALnet

(NB. These two channels have the same owner, TheSaint, and seem to be sharing a new Bot so these figures may not reflect the true picture).

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 481,645; the 10th was 8,426. This is 1.75% of No.1's score, and below average, indicating MONOPOLY!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 280,434; the 10th was 3,395. This is 1.21% of No.1's score, and way below average, indicating MONOPOLY!

TrivGod competition: comparing 1st and 2nd scores

A TrivGod is a player whose score is manifestly higher than his/her nearest competitor. We've attempted to find out whether a TrivGod is deliberately playing alone in quiet times, without competition, in order to score high points; or if he/she is genuinely competing with other high scoring players and has earned the title of TrivGod.

Arranged according to highest percentage difference between the 1st and 2nd scores - highest indicating more competition - the following list was collated from information gathered during the month of October 2011 from sites that interest us.

Before looking at the individual channels, here is the % AVERAGE of the 4 trivia channels that were compared:

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 52.08% puts #triviaspot 1st; and the uneven numbers indicate this is a trivia channel that attracts annual players).

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 5,774,708; the 2nd was 1,664,891. This is 28.83% of No.1's score, and higher than average, indicating competition!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 403,235; the 2nd was 279,339. This is 69.27% of No.1's score, and MUCH higher than average, indicating REAL competition!

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 49.05% puts #trivia 2nd; and the uneven numbers indicate this is a trivia channel that attracts monthly players).

3. #teamtrivia at DALnet

The top annual score for 2011 at mid-October was 129,243; the 2nd was 65,077. This is 50.35% of No.1's score, and higher than average, indicating competition!

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 18,280; the 2nd was 8,280. This is 45.30% of No.1's score, and higher than average, indicating competition!

(A combined annual and monthly ave % of 47.82% puts #teamtrivia 3rd; and the even numbers indicate this is a trivia channel for both annual and monthly players).

4. #triviaholic / #londontrivia at DALnet

The top mid-October score for 2011 was 280,434; the 2nd was 46,047. This is 16.42% of No.1's score, and way below average, indicating NO competition!

Beginners and TrivGods

The mistake many beginners make is to go straight to a popular trivia channel where the TrivGods hang out and then complain bitterly that nobody gives them a chance.

An excellent place for beginners is #londontrivia @ undernet which physically prevents TrivGods from scoring after a 10 question streak. A message appears: “don't you ever get enough? Be a good Christian, let others play too!” Unfortunately, this channel is not listed in the IRC directories because for some reason is chooses not to have any welcome message or instructions.

The mere fact that there is a scarcity of Trivia rooms stipulating the level of play required shows that everyone prefers to be in one room with all levels playing. We found only two channels that clearly appear to exclude beginners:

Comment: The channel has cute commands – !Drinks !food !8ball !beer !rules – but unfortunately nobody was playing during the survey, and the top10 for the week was empty, indicating the channel may be deserted.

If a beginner goes to a channel like #exp-triv, or even one of the more popular trivia channels, then why should he/she be given a chance? This is a competitive game, guys, not a kumbaya meeting! There are hundreds of small trivia channels out there where beginners can hone their skills and enjoy a welcome they will not get in a channel dominated by TrivGods, so stop complaining!

So, is it better to have TrivGods and beginners - and everyone in between - playing in the same channel, or should more trivia rooms stipulate the level of playing required?

PRO:

It is definitely better to have all levels in one room because a canny beginner will learn much by watching the TrivGods play – and nothing is more satisfying than scoring on a question that only he/she knows in a roomful of TrivGods.

It is true that some TrivGods have a phenomenal memory and a quick brain, but most TrivGods gain that distinction after years of playing in one or more channel, learning the question-files backwards – and some merely become a TrivGod by playing 24/7.

Speed of connection and typing skill play as much a vital part in IRC trivia as brains, even more so perhaps, so new players who invest in a top level connection and a speed typing course could even-up the playing-field very quickly once they have familiarized themselves with the questions (most of which repeat over time).

CON:

A game dominated by TrivGods does tend to scare off new players and the channel risks ending up stale or even dead. Even the TrivGods tire of playing with the same old question-file and the same old people.

Starting off in a beginner’s level room sounds like a good idea but it may not give players the competition they need and the incentive to try harder.

A game dominated by TrivGods may encourage new players to cheat by using scripting.

The scores end up totally skewed at the top end, indicating that a TrivGod may be playing alone without any competition at all, or playing 24/7 denying new players a real chance to play the game. If someone is definitely hogging a channel, then a score limit could be set for each day and once reached a player is prevented from gaining more points.

Regular or casual players?

It is impossible to figure out from directory information whether the 'users' listed are steadfast regulars, casual regulars, fly-bys or bots.

If you are going to make a time investment in a trivia channel, then you want to be certain that you're playing with steadfast regulars rather than the other type of users.

The only way to do that is to check the stats - most of which are not listed on the web - so you need to visit each channel with features that interest you and look at their Top10 for the year as well and their Top10 for the current month and do some analysing.

Community Webpage/Forum?

A community webpage or forum for a trivia channel can be as innocuous as a simple page giving basic information for the game or it can be a full-blown cornucopia of facts about players and upcoming events. Whatever, it's nice to have a web presence for an IRC room which never sees the light of day!

A trivia room with a community webpage or forum is a good indication that the channel is seeking to establish an ongoing presence and values its players. If you're playing trivia in an IRC channel rather than anonymously on the web, then community and friendship must be important to you.


PRO:

A community webpage or forum is not only good for promoting friendship but it's also useful for making announcements and keeping in touch with players who may be away from the game for some reason.

A forum would be the ideal place to have those extended discussions that you can't have in a trivia channel. A trivia game often sparks a lot of discussion and without time or space to address issues properly while new questions are coming at you, it can be frustrating.

If player bios and pics are included, you get to *really* know who you're playing with!

CON:

It's extra work for the trivia channel manager or OPs, and some players actually prefer their 'community' to be underground, never to see the light of day!

Also, it's conceivable that mischievous OPs or players may use a community webpage or forum to divulge information about you that you were happy to divulge in the relative privacy of a trivia channel, but would not like to see published online for the world to see. It's a possibility, but if the channel manager's purpose is to build a lasting harmonious community then this sort of thing would be strongly discouraged.

Website for Stats?

An online stats feature is perhaps the #1 indication of a quality trivia room. Most trivia rooms have a rudimentary stats system where you type !myscore or something like that to see how you're going, or !top10 to see who the TrivGods are, but very few trivia rooms have a website facility for viewing scores and ranks in real-time (or at the end of each month).


PRO:

Players don't have to waste time with their own score-sheets in order to sort out where they are in relation to others, and the game is not interrupted umpteen times by players wanting the scores of other players.

With web stats you get to recognize players who don't play in your timezone, and find players you never knew existed!

You feel part of something big and worthwhile. It promotes community spirit and healthy competition.

You don't have to be in the trivia room to see your stats -- you can take a quick look at the website stats while you're at work to see who has overtaken you while you were sleeping!


CON:

Some website stats show far more information about you than your trivia score - e.g #trivia at OperaNet shows your country of origin as well as your chat with other players!


Mainly, though, the websites that a lot of trivia rooms advertise for viewing stats are defunct and have been so for many years.

If a trivia room advertises something that does not exist, you get to wonder.... is anyone at home?

Some websites turn out to be advertising for the channel, or have player bios, and do not, in fact, display any scoring statistics whatsoever. If you definitely want online stats, you need to trawl through the list to check that the feature exists and is up-to-date.

If you're just a casual player and have no investment in any particular channel then this feature is not going to bother you,but if you intend to spend a considerable amount of your free time playing trivia then you will most definitely want to choose a room that is manned by a fair-minded OP during your time-slot.


PRO:
An Operator keeps law and order in a room and protects it from being invaded by spammers and abusers.

Players are more likely to mind their manners when an Op is present.


CON:

An Operator can also be mischievous, kicking and banning players at whim. This scenario is more likely if the Op is a competitive player. One way around this is to ensure that the channel has more than one OP - or, better still, to offer OPs to all regular players - which is what one particular new trivial channel is doing - see #trivia at WikkedWire network; Ops gained after 100 correct answers!

Global or local players?

By virtue of English being the most popular second-language, all English-speaking trivia rooms attract global players and cannot claim to be exclusive haunts for local players. This is in stark contrast to trivia rooms in other languages which only attract local players, unless of course an English-speaker wants to improve his/her foreign language skills in a non-English speaking trivia room.

All an English-speaking trivia channel can do is make the request that only English can be spoken in channel; and, failing that, entry by invitation only will assure only local players can enter the room if that is what the manager wants.

PRO:

It's great to meet players from all over the world!


CON:

The #1 gripe of English-speaking trivia players is that their local room gets flooded by global players whose language skills, playing ability, cultural etiquette and/or *motives* may not be up to par, or strictly "on the level".

Being friendly, we wish to make global players feel welcome but if their numbers are in excess of the local players there is a sense of being "taken over". This is especially the case if the global players insist on using their own language in chat, attempt to push political or religious agendas or are using scripts to obtain unfair advantage.

Having good OPs in an English-speaking channel becomes a necessity when this sort of thing is happening.

Another problem arises when a global player may not be up to par and time is spent away from the game trying to help them. Please remember this when you visit a foreign-language trivia room hoping to improve your language skills! It works both ways!

Easy Access?

Some IRC networks are very difficult to connect to during peak periods, so your choice of a trivia room may be restricted by this fact alone. Having overcome this problem, you are then faced with other problems of access:


1. are you voiced (+v) on start? #Anime_AM at Rizon; #cyberdate at DALnet; and #action at Rizon have special !voice commands that you need to perform on top of all of the other commands.


2. are you able to chat without a symbol? On #trivia at OperaNet, you need to type ' before any chat while a question is being asked. This makes spontaneous chat virtually impossible (but you do get a long break between question rounds to have a discussion).


3. no need to register? On #trivia at IRCstorm you are encouraged to register your nick for the best experience - and this may be annoying if you regularly change your nick, or just want a quick game of trivia. For regular players, however, it is highly advisable to join a network that does protect you from nukers, hackers and nickstealers. See Masking vs showing IP address


4. is the TrivBot format accessible by all irc clients? On #trivia at EFnet only certain IRC clients can read the format.


5. easily readable hint symbols? Some TrivBots use ---, *** or @@@ for hints. If your eyesight is not very good, the dash symbol can be difficult to read - and gets worse over time. Be warned!


6. is the Trivbot stable? Most Trivbots are regularly offline for a short period for maintenance, and a good OP will let you know when this happens; but some trivia channels have incredibly unstable bots for various reasons (#trivia at EFnet is one of them, see What are TrivMONs? ).


7. is the channel manager and/or OPs accessible? Many IRC trivia channels are run automatically by Bots, without OPs,and although there may be an e-mail address for contacting the manager, he/she never replies.(#trivia at EFnet is one of them).
